Montana Tech stands apart as the state’s only university officially designated as a special focus STEM institution. Our strategic plan, Deliberately Distinct, provides the platform to fulfill this unique mandate: to rise to meet America’s emerging needs by preparing the next generation of STEM leaders. By concentrating our academic and research expertise along Our "4-Lane Highway" of Natural Resources, Infrastructure, Health & Wellbeing, and Leadership & Workforce Development, we are intentionally focused to solve the most pressing challenges facing our students, the state of Montana, and our nation. Drawing on a 125-year legacy of producing graduates of hardworking problem solvers, this plan positions us for the future and accelerates our commitment to distinctive programs and a robust campus culture where we refuse to settle for mere excellence.

Deliberately Distinct

Montana Tech is different. We don’t try to be “everything for everyone.” Instead, we have a deliberate focus. We are Montana’s STEM University. Our students show up with dirty boots and calloused hands, and we work hard to solve real problems. We embrace Montana as a living laboratory, emphasizing the value of experiential learning, applied research, and authentic community building.

Our results are clear. Among all 4-year, public universities in the state, Montana Tech has the highest graduation rate, and our graduates have the highest starting salaries.

Our 4-Lane Highway

Founded in 1900 as the Montana State School of Mines, we offered degrees in mining and electrical engineering as we electrified the country during the industrial revolution.

With each watershed moment, we expanded our offerings to meet America’s newly emerging needs. From the world wars to globalization, and from the environmental movement to a growing population’s health needs, we’ve been solving real problems for 125 years.

Throughout our journey, we’ve maintained our identity as Montana’s STEM University.
