Montana Tech Partners to Tackle Student Food Insecurity

Montana Tech is expanding its efforts to address student food insecurity through a new partnership with the Food Recovery Network, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to recovering surplus food and redirecting it to individuals in need.

The partnership, established through the leadership of Madeline Thomas, Director of Campus Life, will provide the Montana Tech Student Food Pantry with access to surplus, wholesome food that would otherwise go to waste. The initiative supports the university's commitment to student well-being while advancing sustainable practices that reduce food waste.

"Student success extends beyond the classroom," said Thomas. "Meeting students' basic needs is fundamental to their academic achievement and overall well-being. This partnership with the Food Recovery Network allows us to expand the resources available through our Student Food Pantry while promoting environmental stewardship through food recovery."

The Food Recovery Network is the largest student-led movement against food waste and hunger in the United States, partnering with colleges, universities, and community organizations to recover surplus food from campus dining facilities and local food providers. Through this collaboration, Montana Tech will increase the availability of nutritious food options for students facing food insecurity while contributing to broader sustainability efforts.

The Montana Tech Student Food Pantry serves as a confidential resource for students experiencing food insecurity and is part of the university's ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive campus environment where all students have the opportunity to thrive academically and personally.

By partnering with the Food Recovery Network, Montana Tech continues to strengthen its student support initiatives while reinforcing the university's mission to promote student success through innovative programs and community collaboration.

Community members, alumni, faculty, staff, and local businesses who wish to support the Montana Tech Student Food Pantry are encouraged to make donations of food items or financial contributions. Donations help ensure that students have consistent access to nutritious food throughout the academic year.

Food donations may be dropped off at Student Union Building Information Desk form 8am - 5pm, Monday through Friday. Organizations interested in partnering with the Student Food Pantry or supporting future food recovery efforts are encouraged to contact Madeline Thomas at 406-496-4458 or mthomas3@mtech.edu.
