The research of Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology hydrogeologist Jackson Quarles (B.S. Geological Engineering, ’20, M.S. Hydrogeological Engineering, ’21) is featured in the April 16, 2026 installment of PBS Terra.
The episode, “America Made Its Most Toxic Lake. Now We Need What’s Inside.,” features Quarles’ research into the possible extraction of rare earth elements from Berkeley Pit. In a day since its launch, the video had amassed more than 500,000 views on YouTube.
