Biography

Scott L. Coguill received the B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wyoming, Laramie, WY, in 1983 and the M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wyoming in 2000, thesis title, “An evaluation of open-hole compression test methods for composite materials.”

He worked at Hercules Aerospace, Salt Lake City, UT, from 1983 to 1987as a lead quality control engineer for a carbon fiber/epoxy prepreg manufacturing facility. From 1987 to 1990 he served as a Staff Engineer for the Composite Materials Research Group within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wyoming. In 1990 he developed for an industrial customer an all composite fiberglass/resin boat trailer spring based on a hybrid manufacturing process of filament winding and resin transfer molding. From 1990 to 1994 he served as President of the testing company he founded, Advanced Materials Testing, Inc. This company specialized in non-standard test methods for fiber reinforced polymer composites materials, developed economical, high volume test methods for industry, and provided test services nationally to the automotive, sporting goods and aerospace industries. From 1994 to 2002 he served as the Lead staff engineer for the Composite Materials Research Group within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wyoming. He supported both academic programs (masters and doctoral projects) and industrial materials testing needs. From 2002 to 2015 he was a Senior Research Engineer for Resodyn Corporation, Butte, MT. He won and was the principal investigator for in excess of $5.5M in competitive grant money for research from various Federal agencies including NASA, NSF, DHS, and DoD. Mr. Coguill is nationally recognized for his work in the areas of advanced coatings applications, propellant mixing, and processing methods. He became an Adjunct Professor at Montana Tech in 2015 and the Lab Director for the Civil and Mechanical Engineering Department in 2017. Mr. Coguill has been the Lab Director for the Mechanical Engineering Department since 2018 and oversees critical lab operations in the Natural Resources Research Center.
