Montana Tech Library began in 1900 when the school's first professor of Geology and Mineralogy, Alexander N. Winchell, wrote scores of letters to foreign and domestic  geological organizations requesting that they send him conference proceedings and scientific reports.  The first library building was completed in 1940 and moved to its current location in 1978.  Renovations on the first floor were completed in 2011.
