About Dual Enrollment

Dual Enrollment is the broad term for opportunities for high school students to take college courses while still in high school.

Students take Dual Enrollment courses for either Dual Credit or College Credit Only. Dual Credit courses award high school and college credit simultaneously for the same course. College Credit Only courses award college credit (and not high school credit) for a college course.

Montana University System colleges and universities offer Dual Enrollement courses via two delivery models: Early College and Concurrent Enrollment.

Benefits of Signing up for Dual Enrollment

• Cost Effective – Let’s be honest, college is expensive! Through the Montana University system, students are eligible to enroll in 6 college credits though the ONE TWO FREE program. After a student uses their 6 free credits, students pay 50% of Highlands College tuition 
• Builds Confidence – Taking a college level course shows students, parents, and teachers that the student is college capable. 
• Variety – Students get to choose from a wide selection of classes. 
• Flexibility – Courses are offered at local high schools, online, or on campus at Highlands College and Montana Tech.

• Resume Building – You will be able to include that you have completed a college level course/have college experience on your resume. 
• Getting Ahead – Get a head start on your degree - helping you graduate college on time or even early, maybe even double major or enrich college experience. Even if you decide not to go to college right away and want to go later, you already have some college credits in your back pocket. 
• Looks Good for Admissions - Students can demonstrate their readiness for college to admissions committees. 
• Explore – Students can find areas of interest before declaring a major. 
• Equity – Dual Enrollment provides equal opportunity for students to jump start their opportunity for post-secondary education.

Things to Consider About Dual Enrollment

• College Transcript – Student's dual enrollment course and grade (even if they withdraw or fail) will be transferred to their permanent college transcript. 
• Effort – It is important that students are truly ready to put in effort towards the class(es) they sign up for. A lack of effort could result in poor grades. 
• Withdrawing – If a student chooses to withdraw, they must withdraw from both their high school course AND college course. Failing to do so may result in a W of F on their transcript. 
• Credit Transfer – Not all out of state/private colleges accept dual credit – students must check in with the school they are planning to attend and see if the credits will transfer.  
• Scheduling – Students must make sure the class(es) they sign up for fits with their schedule. 
• Athletic Eligibility – Please check with your recruiting school to ensure taking dual credit doesn't affect your athletic eligibility.
• Admissions – Taking a dual enrollment course does not guarantee the student's acceptance into the college that they are taking the course from.
