Explanation of Expenses

Direct Costs

Direct costs are the items that are paid directly to Montana Tech in the form of tuition & fees and room & board. The total of these two figures is typically used when comparing the cost of education among various colleges and universities. Direct costs include:

  • Tuition & Fees: Tuition and fees are the price you pay for taking classes at Montana Tech. This amount can change based on your academic program, the types of classes you take, and the number of credit hours you take. The table above estimates tuition and fees based on a student taking 12 credits a semester, with no specialty lab or program fees. In addition to basic educational costs, tuition and fees support student activities and provide access to the student health center, computer services, and athletic events.
  • Room & Board: Room and board is the combine costs for housing and food while attending Montana Tech. This amount can change based on the type of room and meal plan you choose. The table above estimates room and board based on a double-occupancy room and a 7-day per week meal plan. If you decide to live off-campus, you’ll have your own rent and meal costs to consider in your estimate.
Indirect Costs

Indirect costs are the items that a student will likely incur while attending college, but are not paid directly to Montana Tech. These expenses are highly variable and will fluctuate depending on each individual student’s needs and lifestyle. Indirect costs include:

  • Health Insurance: While not included in the table above, Montana Tech requires all students to have medical insurance for hospitalization or referral beyond Montana Tech’s Student Health Services. Students who are not covered under another plan can purchase medical insurance through a campus-approved policy at the beginning of each semester. If you elect to purchase this insurance policy, add an additional $2,700 to your estimate.
  • Books & Supplies: Books and supplies are the estimated total of all the course materials you will need while attending Montana Tech. This amount can change depending upon the classes and number of credits you take. Textbooks and other materials can be purchased at the Montana Tech Bookstore.
  • Transportation and Miscellaneous Expenses: Transportation and miscellaneous expenses include things like laundry, cell phone bills, and gas money. These items will vary depending on your lifestyle and how often you plan to travel home.
