The Legacy of Montana Tech
In 1900, Montana Technological University began its journey as the Montana State School of Mines, with a modest start. Over the years, Montana Tech has evolved into the state's only Special Focus University, providing a comprehensive STEM education to over 2,400 students.
In the coming year, the University will commemorate its past, honor its present, and envision a future of innovation and excellence. We invite you to join us on this historic journey.
The Legacy of Montana Tech
Montana Tech's rich history began in 1900, originally established as the Montana State School of Mines. Its foundation was made possible by the Enabling Act of 1889, which granted Montana statehood and allocated 100,000 acres of public land to create a school dedicated to mining education.
The institution opened its doors in Main Hall to just 21 students, offering two key degrees: mining engineering and electrical engineering. Since these humble beginnings, Montana Tech has grown into the extraordinary institution it is today, continuing its legacy of innovation and excellence.
