You’ll develop an in-depth understanding of natural resource recovery, the economics of the industry, and respect for the environment. At Montana Tech, students learn drilling engineering, production engineering, and reservoir engineering, as well as receive hands-on lab and field experience in our unparalleled location in the Northern Rockies.

The Montana Tech Petroleum Engineering department guarantees our students relevant industry exposure and meaningful contact with faculty. Students grow through participation in student organizations like our Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Student Chapter, and opportunities to work with faculty on undergraduate research. Our department provides a quality education in Petroleum Engineering that combines theory and practice for undergraduate and graduate students. This education will produce Petroleum Engineers who provide value to employers and society immediately upon graduation and who can grow in the practice of professional engineering. Graduates will be prepared to meet the challenges of well drilling and completion, oil and gas production operations, and reservoir engineering management anywhere in the world. The program will emphasize service to the community and industry, dedication to continuous learning, and high ethical standards.

Program Educational Objectives

The educational objectives for the Petroleum Engineering program consist of broad statements that describe the basic purpose of the program.

  1. Graduates will be prepared to assume entry level positions as Petroleum Engineers upon graduation.
  2. Graduates will understand the role of engineers in society and their obligations to the profession and society.

Attainment of these outcomes prepares graduates to enter the professional practice of engineering.
