Student Government

Student government consists of students participanting in all three Upward Bound.

Elected officials consist of President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Sergeant of Arms, Anaconda High Representative, Butte High Representative, Capital High Representative, and Helena High Representative. These offices are elected the first week of the summer program and must be summer participants.

Student government exists to:

  1. Assist students in learning parliamentary procedures,
  2. To develop the importance of being involved in civic activities,
  3. And to provide a forum for students to develop some aspects of the program to meet their groups needs.

PRESIDENT

Desired Qualities

Required Responsibilities

  • Leads students by being a positive role model (i.e. is involved in other extra curricular activities and is the first to help out at Upward Bound activities)
  • Inform students about activities and events within the program
  • To be actively involved in all Upward Bound activities
  • Works with Upward Bound staff and high school representatives prior to the summer academy's Tuesday meeting and academic year's Saturday activities to develop a student government meeting agenda.
  • Provides the leadership to the student government meetings by following the agenda, directing conversations, and calling for votes
  • Helps make new students feel welcome at Upward Bound events
  • Communicates needs of students to Upward Bound staff
  • Gives farewell speech at Upward Bound Banquet
  • Submits monthly articles to Upward Bound staff for the newsletter

VICE-PRESIDENT

Desired Qualities

  • Outgoing
  • Cool
  • Does not flip out under pressure
  • Energetic
  • Should be like that Verizon Wireless guy that says, "Can you hear me know?"

Required Responsibilities

  • Assists president with duties and decisions regarding Upward Bound
  • Assumes all presidential responsibilities in the absence of the president
  • Oversees the establishment and productivity of any student committees as needed
  • Maintains good attendance at all evening and Saturday activities
  • Represents students' interest on Upward Bound hiring committees
  • Submits monthly newsletter articles to Upward Bound staff

SECRETARY

Desired Qualities

  • Organized
  • Nice hand writing
  • Good speller
  • Ability to pay attention

Required Responsibilities

  • Must learn who everyone in the program is, so that note taking and record keeping is easier
  • Takes notes during student government meetings and records decisions made by the group
  • Assists the president and vice president with meeting management
  • Assumes Treasurer duties when treasurer is not present
  • Submits monthly newsletter articles to the Upward Bound staff

TREASURER

Desired Qualities

  • Honest
  • Trustworthy
  • Good at math

Required Responsibilities

  • Is responsible to report on the student government account balance to the students at every student government meeting and explain any changes in the balance
  • Should present fundraising ideas to the student government for discussion
  • Follows up on any fundraising ideas
  • Assumes secretarial duties when secretary is not present
  • Submits monthly newsletter articles to Upward Bound staff

SERGEANT OF ARMS

Desired Qualities

  • Ability to pay attention in noisy areas
  • Ability to mediate confrontations
  • Loud voice

Required Responsibilities

  • Regularly attends all student government meetings in the summer academy and also Saturday activities
  • Preserves order at all student government meetings by reminding students to pay attention and talk only on their turn
  • Assists president and other officers with motivating the students to participate in activities as needed
  • Submits monthly newsletter articles to the Upward Bound staff

REPRESENTATIVES

Desired Qualities

  • Open minded to other's thoughts and ideas
  • Has good management skills

Required Responsibilities

  • Must maintain good attendance at evening meetings, Saturday activities, and summer activities
  • Should delegate position responsibilities to someone else when he/she know in advance they will not be attending any meetings
  • Is responsible to report school and community schedule of events to Upward Bound staff (i.e. tell the staff what date the prom is so activities aren't planned on that day)
  • Is responsible to get Upward Bound picture in their schools yearbook
  • Will assist Upward Bound staff with recruitment of new students each spring
  • Communicates the needs and desires of students from their school to the student government president
  • Submits monthly newsletter articles to the Upward Bound staff
