Stipends

Upward Bound Stipend Policy as adopted by Student Government on January 1, 2005,
and amended January 13, 2007, by Student Government.

In order to further motivate students toward achieving the objectives of Upward Bound, we will be distributing stipends to students at the end of each quarter. A $90 quarterly stipend will be made available to all UB students.

In calculating each individual’s stipend, we will begin with the $90 available stipend, and then multiply it by a grade point factor. The grade point factor is as follows.

3.5 to 4.0
100% available
$90.00
3.0 to 3.49
80% available
$72.00
2.5 to 2.99
60% available
$54.00
Below a 2.5 GPA
0% available
$0.00

Next, the newly calculated available stipend amount is divided by two, one half representing weekly meeting attendance the other half representing Saturday activity attendance.

Students who attend all weekly meetings will be awarded their full amount. Students who do not attend the weekly meetings, but make up their work by meeting with their Upward Bound Coordinator the next day in school will be awarded their full amount. (If students are below a 2.5 GPA then they are required to meet with their Upward Bound Coordinator two school day periods in order to complete the curriculum and make up their tutoring.) Students who do not make up the work within one week of their absence will revoke that half of their stipend.

Then, Saturday activity attendance is evaluated. If students attended both Saturday activities in the quarter, they will be awarded their full available stipend. No excused absences or opportunities to makeup for missing Saturday activities will be made available. If they miss one or both Saturday activities they will forego that half of their stipend and be awarded the amount for their evening meeting attendance.

Upward Bound is a place to have fun, learn and interact with other students in order to develop the skills necessary to succeed in college. All of this can be done without swearing, smoking, public displays of affection, or general disrespect to other students or staff. Inappropriate behavior at any UB function may also reduce your stipend should UB staff deem it necessary. Extraordinary behavior at any UB function may also increase your stipend. Examples of this would be students not required to stay for tutoring, stay and work on homework, tutor their peers, prepare for standardize tests, apply for scholarships and/or colleges. These are all activities that would be rewarded with a standardized increased stipend amount.

Addendum to Stipend Policy made by UB Staff on August 19, 2005.
It is the students responsibility to submit a copy of their high school report card to the Upward Bound staff within three weeks of the end of each quarter. Upward Bound will request your stipend check if and only if we can confirm your GPA with a copy of your report card. It is not the staff’s responsibility to solicit a copy of your grades from your school. This allows for faster and more individualized stipend requests.
