The Gear Up Grant is administered through the Montana Office of Commissioner of High Education. The purpose of Gear Up is to help more than 200,000 disadvantaged children, beginning in the middle grades, to prepare for and get on the pathway to success in college. The Education Department studies show that students who take academically demanding high school course work are more likely to go on to college and succeed. However, disadvantaged students are not always aware of the need to take rigorous academic courses to prepare for college. Montana Tech hosts week long summer camps with hands-on science and math activities to help expose and encourage young students to prepare for an academic future to succeed and earn more in the work force.
Montana Tech has hosted six different summer residential science programs over the past six years: Children of the Earth, Extreme Wellness, A River Runs Through It, A Walk Among the Buffalo, and a World of Opportunities.
Many Gear Up demonstration schools are already familiar with Montana Tech's existing summer programs. The following school districts have assisted with the promotion of the summer camps, distributing of applications, and completion of the teacher recommendation component of camp applications: Box Elder, Brady, Brockton, Browning, Charlo, Kalispell, Hays, Lame Deer, Pryor, Rocky Boy, St. Ignatius, and Winnet.
