International Students - Tax Information
Tax Information for International Students
Everyone, whether employed for pay or not, must file tax forms after the end of each calendar year. The Student Life Programs Office and Payroll Office sponsors a "Tax Help Seminar" to assist foreign students and scholars with their tax forms. The seminar is usually held at the beginning in February. Montana Tech's International Student Advisor will keep you up-to-date on the date, time and place of the seminar.
If you have NOT been employed you still need to fill out form 8843 and mail it to the Internal Revenue Service Center, Philadelphia, PA 19255. This does not need to be postmarked until June 15.
If you have been employed you need to fill out form 8843 and attach it to form 1040NR or 1040NREZ (The EZ form is a simpler version that you can probably use if you have simply earned wages. Check the instructions that come with both forms to see which is most appropriate for your situation.) for the United States Federal Government. These forms can all be downloaded from the web at: http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/formspubs/index.html.
If you have been employed you will also need to file a Montana State Tax Form . This form can be obtained at the Payroll Office. They usually have tax forms available by the middle of January.
If you have been employed during the year you will receive a W2 form and possibly a 1042S form [for scholarship monies or Tax Treaty]. These are required by law to come to you by mail by the end of January. If you do not receive a W2 form from each of your employer(s) by that date contact them directly to see if the forms have been mailed. [Montana Tech is considered to be one employer, even if you have worked in several departments on campus.] If the forms were mailed to the wrong address, you may need to have them reprint another copy for you. This W2 and possibly the 1042S form(s) need to accompany the tax forms you submit to the Federal Government and Montana State Government.
You MUST attend the seminar if you wish you have assistance in filling our the necessary tax forms you are required to submit to the U.S. Government and the State of Montana.
You will need the following with you when you attend the Tax Help Seminar:
