Memo To:      Employers

From:      Margie Pascoe, Foreign Student Advisor

Re:      International Student Employment

The purpose of this memo is to clarify off-campus employment eligibility and opportunities for international students attending and graduating from Montana Tech.

International students who have not graduated are eligible to work off campus in a category defined by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) as curricular practical training. To be considered for curricular practical training, the work must be related to the students major and the student must receive academic credit.  Academic credit for curricular practical training is handled through Montana Tech’s Career Services Office.  In order for students to be eligible to apply, they must:

  • Be in lawful F-1 status
  • Have been a full-time student for at least nine months.

Students who meet eligibility requirements, register for internship credit and properly apply for curricular practical training will have their SEVIS Form I-20 authorized by me indicating employment eligibility verification.

Graduating international students are eligible for post completion practical training designed to provide actual employment experience in their chosen profession for a maximum of one year; per degree level.  Its purpose is to “round-off” or compliment their academic work.  Students eligible and authorized for post-completion practical training apply to CIS and are issued an “Employment Authorization Document” (EAD).  Our office is part of the process and assists students with their applications.

Curricular practical training and post-completion practical training are the two most common categories for Montana Tech International students seeking authorization to work off campus.  I work closely with this application and authorization process and would be happy to answer questions and assist our students with employment opportunities.

After graduation International students are eligible to work under the H-1B Visa, however, an offer of employment from a U.S. employer is required.  For detailed information on the H-1B visa visit  http://uscis.gov/graphics/howdoi/h1b.htm
