Training Methods of Mixed Martial Artists

Shelli Vicars

Abstract

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a sport that brings together several talented combat athletes from an array of backgrounds.  It is also known by the following names: extreme fighting, reality fighting, and ultimate fighting.  Ever since the sport of mixed martial arts began, athletes have come to recognize that the training for this form of fighting is comprehensive in nature.

A study was conducted on self reported training methods of mixed martial arts athletes.  The study gathered information regarding overall training volume, supplemental use, and specific exercises used.  The information gathered will be used to make conclusions about the knowledge of mixed martial art athletes about exercise training methods specific to their sport and the safeness of their supplement use.

Biography

I am originally from Billings, Montana and will be graduating from Montana Tech with a degree in OSH-Applied Health.  I am currently trying to get into Physical Therapy school and should know in the next few weeks.  I am extremely excited about pursuing a career in physical therapy.

I played basketball for the Lady Orediggers during my first three years at Montana Tech.  I love sports and am very interested in the training methods used by athletes of different sports.  I knew very little about mixed martial arts, but through this research project I have learned a great deal about the sport.
