The Effects of Yoga on Heart Rate and Blood Pressure

Sarah Thielen and Sally Carey

Abstract

Stress affects so many of us.  It can have physical, mental, and emotional effects.  Exercise is one great way to help ease stress.  Yoga is a more of a focused/meditative type of exercise.  As researchers, we were curious to see how yoga could affect someone who attended on a fairly regular basis.  We are taking the blood pressures and heart rates of people participating in a YMCA instructed yoga class.  Measurements of heart rate and blood pressure are taken before and after class twice a week for ten weeks.  Data on the participant’s gender, age, activity level, and yoga experience has also been recorded.  The sampled data will be analyzed using paired T-tests due to the dependant data.

Biography

Sarah Thielen
I was born and raised in Butte, and have attended Montana Tech since the fall semester of 2001.  In that time, I have pursued a degree in Mathematics, and am now following my passions in the Applied Health field.  Also, I am currently attending the University of Montana Western in a pursuit of a Secondary Education degree, which will be completed by the fall of this year.

I am 23 year old gym rat, to say the least.  Growing up in Butte may have contributed to my addiction.  One of my greatest passions in life is motivating, educating, and supporting people in their path to a healthy lifestyle.  I love to be in the gym, and have often referred to it as my sanctuary.  Our undergraduate research project has allowed me to intertwine my passions with my education.  The one goal I hope to accomplish throughout my professional career would be just that.

Sally Carey
I am currently a senior in Occupational Safety and Health with an Applied Health Option.  Exercise and its effects on the body have always interested me.  I believe that caring for your body is one of the keys to happiness.  That means dealing with outside pressures, such as stress.  Exercise has long been an outlet for many people. I myself have been running since I was small.  Running has helped carry me through many stressors, especially school.

I was born and raised on a ranch near Boulder, MT.  After high school, I enrolled at Tech. I have attended MT Tech since 2003 and will graduate this May, 2007.  I hope to continue my education and become a Physical Therapist.  I have recently been accepted to graduate school and will continue with three more years of schooling to obtain a DPT, Doctorate of Physical Therapy.
