Deal or No Deal

Celeste McGregor

Abstract

“Deal or No Deal” is a game show where the contestants should use their statistical skills to help choose whether to keep moving forward or to take the money and walk.  There are many explanatory variables that influence the contestant’s decisions, such as what the Banker’s offers are and the amount of money left on the board.

The main goals of this research project are to model the Banker’s offers based on the dollar amounts left on the board and to model the Player’s decisions based on the dollar amounts left on the board.  The data for this research project will be recorded by from the (2006-2007) season of Deal or No Deal.  Statistical models for the Banker’s offers and the Player’s decisions will be formulated using standard and logistic regression analysis.
Then, inferences will be made on the game show results and the reliability of the inferences and models will be assessed.

Biography

I am from Drummond, MT, and I am completing the Statistics option in the Mathematics degree.  I have already completed the Mathematics option and almost went on to teach high school math but I felt I was needed elsewhere.

Straight from high school, I came to Montana Tech in search of a career path.  My first choice was Computer Science which turned out to be something totally different than I expected.  I decided to stick to the subject that I understood, mathematics, and find a way to use it as a career.  Before graduation approached in 2006, I decided I didn’t want to teach and signed up for fall classes to finish out the Statistics option.  I want to use this option to obtain my Ph D in Biostatistics and do cancer research.

I took on the challenge to do an Undergraduate Research Project on the game show “Deal or No Deal.”  I have found out that there is more statistics incorporated into a game show than one would think.
