The Effect of Creatine on Muscle Power Output

Christopher Linhart

Abstract

Creatine is a natural constituent of the body which is formed in the liver, kidneys and pancreas.  It plays a vital role in transferring energy to the muscles to produce contractions and is particularly important when Creatine is phosphorylated to form Phosphocreatine (PCR), which is an immediate source of energy in activities which involve sudden bursts of physical exertion, such as sprinting and jumping.  As the body exercises, the 'pool' of PCR is reduced, which in turn reduces muscle power output.  It is of interest to see whether a Creatine supplement would delay the onset of fatigue in some way.  This could be a significant boost for athletes because Creatine is not a banned substance and could therefore be employed as a performance booster.

The data that has been collected consists of fifteen female and fifteen male subjects, who took part in regular physical exercise, were involved in this experiment. Each subject’s typical power output (in Watts) was recorded before, in the middle and at the end of an eight-week course of a Creatine supplement. Using statistical analyses, I investigated the differences between male and female mean power output at the three time points, and the change in mean power output over time in the combined population of males and females.

Biography

I am in my third year here at Montana Tech studying Mathematics.  With my degree I hope to one day become a math teacher in a small rural school in Montana. I am a country boy at heart that has learned the responsibility of hard work and putting my whole heart into everything I do.  But that doesn’t mean I don’t like to have fun.  I enjoy all kinds of activities and consider myself a jack-of-all-trades.  I will try anything once just to say I have done it; but mostly I enjoy football, baseball, snowboarding, racquetball, wakeboarding, and am currently learning how to play golf.
