Blasting Procedures of the Mining Industry

Christina Lamer

Abstract

In the mining industry there are many ways to loosen and mine the rock. One of the ways to loosen the rock is to use explosives.  There are countless products and methods of drilling and blasting the rounds. Every mine and every explosives engineer likes to do things a little bit differently. At the present time there is no comprehensive database of blasting techniques used by the U.S. mining industry. Often, the mines’ blasting procedures are known only by the companies themselves.

The purpose of this project was to collect data about the mining techniques and blasting design from various mines in order to evaluate how the U.S. mining industry is using advances in blasting practices. The data was gathered from phone interviews and was in the following categories: types of explosives used, typical geotechnical rock conditions, equipment used for blasting, blast pattern and mining method. The resulting data is a valuable resource that NIOSH can use to reference information regarding blast patterns and blast design that can be correlated with injury and accident statistics to improve safety related to ground falls in underground mines. Also the research can possibly be used by the mining industry to improve their mining techniques.

Biography

Being originally from Portland, OR, moving to Butte has been quite an experience. I am currently a junior in Geological Engineering, emphasizing in the mining industry. I have completed two internships during my summers at Montana Tech and am working for Rio Tinto Minerals at the US Borax Mine in southern California this summer. During my time at Montana Tech I have been active in many student organizations including being the Vice President of the Geological Engineering Club, being active with the Intercollegiate Mining Team, and a student member of both the Geological Society of America (GSA) and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME).
