NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament Predictor
Gregg Feddes
Abstract
Division I college basketball is one of the most popular sports in America today, and its pinnacle is the NCAA basketball tournament. It is the largest tournament of its kind in the United States. Sixty-five teams battle each for the right to call themselves “National Champs.” The research question addressed in this project is “Is it possible to predict the outcome of the NCAA basketball tournament?” In particular, I am looking for factors that may influence the success of a team in the tournament. The goals of this research are to be able to predict upsets, surprise teams, and the eventual champion.
Many different factors believed to influence tournament outcomes will be investigated. The factors believed to be most important in predicting tournament outcomes are seeding, pre-season ranking, pre-tournament ranking, preseason tournament results, and conference rankings. Using statistical methods a prediction model will be developed for predicting team success in the tournament.
