Fitting Mixture Models to Madison River Obsidian Glass Flake Rind Thicknesses
Jennifer Erin Esp
Abstract
Yellowstone National Park was covered by shallow inland seas until about 100-50 million years ago when the North American Plate collided with the Pacific Plate compressing the earth and leading to the formation of numerous volcanoes. These volcanoes were very active for approximately 15 million years causing the formation of obsidian glass. Obsidian glass absorbs water over time that forms a rind at a known rate. Rind thickness can be calibrated to age using hydration dating techniques. These rinds have been known to fracture during glaciation periods. There are at least three known glaciation periods in this area. The goal of this research project is to model the distribution of the thickness of the observed obsidian rinds. Once a model is fit to the distribution it will be used to estimate the time of the previous glaciation period.
