Research Progress in 2001: Research Volume
Published: January 17, 2002
By: Lynn Job
The last ten years have seen a steady increase in the annual volume of grants and contract expenditures at Montana Tech. This growth has slowed however in the last several years and in FY2001 for the first time we have seen an actual decrease in the grants and contract activity. The Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology was almost constant while the research activity of the campus faculty decreased and is showing very clear signs of saturation at the $3,000,000/year level.
Major New Programs
The Research Office has begun to analyze the proposals submitted in each fiscal year to obtain a better picture of the grant writing activity on the campus and the success rate of our proposals. This will allow us to further refine our financial projections. The figure below shows the results of the grant writing activity for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2001.

The value of submitted proposals is an all time high for the campus and represents the concerted efforts of several teams in addition to many individual efforts. At the end of the fiscal year the success rate in proposals submitted was 57% and the success rate in value was 25%. Since the end of the fiscal year an additional 10 proposals have been funded bringing the total as of November 15, 2001 to a value of $6,107,557 for proposals submitted in FY 2001. We will continue to track these measures of success and productivity and will present the beginnings of an historical perspective in the next annual report.
