John LaFave - 2011 Distinguished Researcher Award

 

John LaFave

John LaFave has been with Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology for 18 years. He was the project hydrologist for the Ground-water assessment program when it began in 1993 and developed several environment tracers now routinely used throughtout the Bureau. His work was instrumental in understanding the elevated nitrate levels in the south end of the Summit valley and led the DEQ to revise its guidance for development in the valley. More recently he has assumed the responsibility for the Bureau’s monitoring efforts in the Yellowstone area. 

He has become a highly regarded speaker on complex issue of the water-human interface, with audiences ranging from technical forums to citizen groups. He has also been very active as a writer, with 57 technical publications and presentations to his credit, and over 50 community presentations.

 

He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin with MA degree in Geology from the University of Texas – Austin.
