Dr. Larry N. Smith —2007 Distinguished Researcher

Dr. Larry Smith accepts the Distinguished Researcher Award Dr. Larry Smith (right) accepting award from Dr. Joe Figueira, Associate Vice Chancellor for Research.

Dr. Larry Smith has been with the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology for 14 years.

During this time his work has focused primarily on characterizing ground water resources in the state of Montana. This has required the development or major upgrades to existing surface and subsurface mapping in several regions of the state.  This in turn led to the discovery of large geological failures and resulting landslides in the Flathead Valley 1.5 million years ago that could reoccur.  In his research he has also developed productive collaborations with staff and faculty from the USGS, UM, MSU, Montana Tech, and the University of Arizona.

He is a prolific communicator and has produced over 18 articles, books and book chapters and 38 abstracts and presentations in addition to 24 open file reports on the Montana ground water program.

During all of these projects he has involved students and has served on the thesis committee of one PhD student and two master’s students.

He is a graduate of University of California at Santa Cruz and holds Masters and PhD degrees in Geology from University of New Mexico.
