Dr. Mary MacLaughlin - 2006 Distinguised Researcher

Dr. Mary MacLaughlin has been with Montana Tech for 10 years. 

 

During this time, she has successfully established a strong presence for herself and Montana Tech in the fields of engineering geology and rock mechanics.  Over the past five years her international reputation has grown as she has established research contacts in China, Japan, Scotland, England, Norway, South Africa, and Israel. Due to her efforts two of her master's students will be spending the summer of 2006 at the China University of Mining and Technology in Beijing courtesy of NSF's East Asia Pacific Summer internship program.

 

She has received over $850,000 in grants and was a key contributor to a recent NSF grant which allowed Montana Tech to build a state of the art facility for testing and modeling of geological materials.  She continues to contribute to her filed of expertise with over 70 publications and presentations.

 

One of her highest research priorities is involvement of students, both at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Since her arrival at Montana Tech, she has mentored numerous graduate students and undergraduate students and managed five federally funded research projects that involved 21 students.

 

She is a graduate of the University of Minnesota and holds a PhD degree from University of California at Berkeley.
