Jon Reiten—2006 Distinguished Researcher Dr. Ed Deal (L), Director of the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology accepting award on behalf of Jon Reiten from Dr. Joe Figueira, Associate Vice Chancellor for Research.Jon Reiten has been with the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology for 21 years.
During this time his work has focused primarily on developing technical data for managing ground-and surface-water resources in Northeastern Montana. His results have allowed a better understanding of the interplay of agricultural uses and the interest in conserving wetland habitats for migratory birds. His testimony at a water rights hearing in 1998 provided the basic data and interpretations required by the hearing officer to make a final decision.
He has also worked on assessing the impacts of oil field brine discharges on water resources. Two new oil field brine projects were recently funded based on his work and will provide background data to design additional cleanup projects and determine environmentally sound disposal practices.
He is a prolific grant writer and has received in excess of $1,350,000 in funding with over 70% of his grants funded. He has also produced 58 publications and presentations describing his research efforts.
During all of these projects he has involved students, both Masters Students and research assistants from Montana Tech in addition to undergraduate students from Rocky Mountain College and MSU-Billings.
He is a graduate of University of North Dakota and holds a Masters degree in Geology from University of North Dakota.
