John Wheaton—2005 Distinguished ResearcherJohn Wheaton has been with Montana Tech for 17 years. He has become recognized as a leader in coal hydrology in Montana and Wyoming. More recently he has become a trusted source of information in the debate on coal bed methane development in Montana and its potential impact on water quality. His research has involved students from both the Montana University System and the University of Wyoming. He has submitted many grant applications and has received over $2,000,000 in funding for his research work. He holds degrees in geology, hydrogeology and environmental studies from the University of Montana-Missoula.
