David Lopez —2004 Distinguished Researcher Dr. David Lopez (C) with Mike O'Neil (L) and Ed Ruppel (R).Dr. David Lopez has been with Montana Tech for 12 years. He has been involved in regional geological research, petroleum geology research and community outreach efforts in eastern Montana. His regional impact has been widespread. Research efforts in regional plate tectonics have lead to a better understanding of mineralization and recovery potentials. His mapping work with the Crow Indians has identified oil and gas reservoirs of economic potential. He has worked with undergraduate students in the Billings area and has supervised Native American students on field research projects. He has submitted a number of proposals and has received over $800,000 in funding for his research work. He holds degrees in geology from the University of Colorado, the University of New Mexico and the Colorado School of Mines.
