Mike Stickney —2003 Distinguished Researcher

Mike Stickney has been with Montana Tech for 22 years. During this time he has become identified with one of Montana Tech’s unique technical services.  He is the Montana authority on what’s moving and shaking and serves as the state authority for all public media outlets.

Beginning in 1980, he has taken a single, antiquated seismograph and developed an earth quake monitoring facility that is a model of cleverness and efficiency for the region.  The network in western Montana now includes 35 stations operating on a high speed digit backbone.  He holds positions on numerous national organizations devoted to seismic measurements and is a frequent lecturer to citizens groups through out the state.  Students are actively involved in the operation of the Earthquake Studies Office and several have continued on for their MS degree at Montana Tech under his guidance.  He holds degrees in geology from the University of Montana –Missoula.
