Research Activity at Montana Tech Joseph F. Figueira, Ph.DVice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies Combined efforts of the Montana Tech faculty, members of the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, and the Center for Advanced Mineral Processing all contributed to the same steady growth in campus research activity in Fiscal Year (FY) 96 that we have been experiencing for the last five years. Grants and contracts expenditures were up 36% from 1995 to nearly $5,000,000 in 1996. Both private and federal grants made this increase possible. The FY 97 column is estimated. Funds from these grants and contracts support both students and faculty, with lesser amounts expended for operations and equipment. Finally, on-campus research activity continued to support the construction and renovation of new research space on campus. Over $300,000 were pledged in FY96, FY97, and in FY 98 toward completion of the Engineering Laboratory Classroom and toward renovation of the Chemistry Building. These two facilities, alone, will add over 15,000 square feet of needed research facilities, both for our undergraduate and graduate students, and for our faculty.
