Don and Andrea Stierle to be featured on ABC's World News
Bill Redeker of ABC News, his producer and film crew came to Montana Tech to interview Dr.’s Andrea and Donald Stierle of the Chemistry Department about their research on taxol and the Berkeley Pit microbes. The interview stemmed from an article published earlier this year by the Stierle’s in the Journal of Organic Chemistry on “Berkelic Acid, A Novel Spiroketal with Selective Anticancer Activity from an Acid Mine Waste Fungal Extremophile”. Berkelic acid is a compound that shows promise in fighting ovarian cancer. ABC filmed Andrea and Don in their research laboratory and in Don’s Organic Chemistry class. They asked many questions on their research, funding sources and the role that intellectual property plays in University research. The piece will air in the next few weeks on “World News With Charles Gibson”, ABC news.

The Mine Waste Technology Program announces two new research projects for 2007.
Research for the new project will be conducted by Dr. Steve Parker from the Chemistry department, and Dr. Willis Weight, and Dr. Chris Gammons from the Geological Engineering department. Each project will fund one graduate student to assist with research.
Dr. Parker will be performing research on The Role of Biogeochemical Process affecting the Flux of Metals to and from Sediments in Mining Impacted Stream.
Dr. Weight and Dr. Gammons will be conduction research on Radionuclides in Mine-Impacted Waters within the Boulder Batholith, Montana.
The Mine Waste Technology Program is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and implemented by MSE Technology Application, Inc. which has been funding research and supporting graduate students at Montana Tech for the past 15 years. For more information about the Mine Waste Technology Program contact Mark Peterson (mepeterson@mtech.edu or ext 4263).
Montana Tech Students Strike Gold
Montana Tech may be a small school but it can compete with the best. This is
particularly true for the Metallurgical & Materials Engineering Department which had three of
its students recognized internationally just recently. Department Head Courtney Young states
“This is a fairly common attribute of students in this field but getting three to win awards of this
size, all in the same year, is substantial and reflects well on
their education.” For more information click HERE.
Designated Driver program for MT Tech Students
Student life is pleased to announce a Designated Driver program for MT Tech Students. This Program is available through coordination with the Safe Kids/Safe Communities program, a community partnership promoting a responsible alternative to the problem of driving under the influence, which causes needless injuries and death.
Designated Driver wristbands will be available on the south campus through the Associated Students College of Technology (ASCOT) and on the north campus at the SUB information desk and in the Residence Halls. With the wristbands students between the ages of 18-21 will be allowed into the local establishment for the purpose of being sure that the individuals they are driving will be able to get a ride home. The individual with the wristband will not be allowed to consume any alcoholic beverages. If caught doing so, the individual could be turned over to law enforcement.
Wristbands will also be available at the following bars: Club 13, VuVilla, KC, Maloney’s and the Depot. Each bar will have its own policy for implementing the program and takes no liability for students trying to circumvent the intention of the program. A student wearing the wristband agrees not to drink any alcoholic beverages and to transport home safely those who are impaired. If there is a large group, more than one Designated Driver may be needed.
Designated Drivers should not drink any alcoholic beverages; therefore, they are never the person least drunk.
A Designated Driver can be used anywhere people ride together after drinking alcohol, including private homes, bars, sporting events, restaurants or parties.
Designated Drivers are also important when someone is taking medication that makes them drowsy or otherwise impaired and not fit to drive.
By implementing and using a Designated Driver program, our Tech community will help fight impaired driving.

Athletic Update
The Montana Tech football team has taken care of business the last two weeks with wins over Eastern Oregon University (17-10) and Montana Western (34-7)to improve their record to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in the Frontier Conference. The game against Eastern Oregon was a defensive battle with the Diggers coming away with a 17-10 victory. Last Saturday, the Diggers took on the Montana Western Bulldogs at Alumni Coliseum. Western jumped out to an early lead with a big passing play in the first quarter. However this would be the only scare Tech would receive on that beautiful afternoon. Tech would end up running away in the second half to a 34-7 win with nearly 400 yards compiled on the ground.
Tomorrow, Montana Tech will travel north to Helena to take on the Carroll College Saints. The Saints have not lost in 25 games now and the Diggers will be looking to end another Carroll College winning streak. The game is set to kick off at 1 pm, and Carroll College is expecting over 7,000 fans to be in attendance. However, if you can not make the game it will be carried on Bresnan cable all over the state. In Butte you can look for it on channel 61.
The Montana Tech Volleyball team recently went to Lewiston Idaho and beat Lewis and Clark State 3-2. With this win the Volleyball team moved to 2-1 in league and 7-8 overall. The Volleyball team will return to the court on October 4th when they take on Montana Western, followed by Westminster University out of Salt Lake City on October 5th.
The Montana Tech Men's and Women's basketball teams are finishing up fall conditioning and officially starting practice in preparation for their first games on Oct. 20. The women started on Wednesday the 27th and the men will start on October 2nd.

Tech professor using "student friendly" technology to teach
Dr. David Hobbs of the Montana Tech Chemistry Department is utilizing Podcasts and Screencasts in Montana Tech’s CHEM 1056, General Chemistry I, course. This technology, which is more familiar to students than to faculty, is not only designed to convey the course material in a refreshing way but is also designed to heighten student interest in the material. The best way to see what David is up to is to link to the blog that he has created for the site.
