Congratulations Dick Berg
Dick Berg, Senior Research Geologist at the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (MBMG) and Curator of Montana Tech's Mineral Museum, was presented the Hal Williams Hardinge award at the Society of Mining Engineering meeting February 27th in Salt Lake City. The Hal Williams Hardinge award, established in 1958, recognizes outstanding achievement which has benefited the field of industrial minerals. Dr. Berg is being honored “for exceptional breadth of expertise in clay, talc/chlorite, barite and gemstones plus teaching, mineral museum curation, extensive geologic mapping, editing of numerous guidebooks and compilations and service to local and national organizations.”

Movie Showing
Montana Tech's own Deric Olsen will be showing his movie The Phoenix Agenda at 8 p.m. on Monday March 10, in the Tech auditorium. The film is free and open to the public. Deric will be available after the film to answer any questions.

Distinguished Author to Give Lecture
Patrick Henry, Author of “We Only Know Men, The rescue of Jews in France during the Holocaust,” will be lecturing at 6:30 p.m., Monday March 10 in the Big Butte room of the Student Union Building.

“A thoroughly researched page-turner. Henry’s tapestry of human stories and theoretical questions helps us understand the recurrent human instinct to protect the oppressed and the helpless first, and figure out why later.” Richard Unsworth, Smith College.

“In just about every chapter, one can sense a strong personal commitment to recognize the courageous, altruistic activity of the rescuers and to inspire others to prevent recurrence of genocidal evil in the present and future. Susan Rubin Suleiman, Harvard.

Chemistry Club Participates in “Day of the Child”
The Montana Tech Chemistry Club participated in the “Day of the Child” event at the Butte Plaza Mall. They worked all day long and were credited by event organizers as being energetic, enthusiastic, and great representatives of Montana Tech to over 500 children. A big congratulations to the Chemistry Club for getting involved in the community.

Steve Parker and Chris Gammons Receive Grant from NSF
Congratulations are in order for Chris Gammons and Steve Parker on receiving a grant from the National Science Foundation. The grant is a collaborative effort between Montana Tech, University of Montana, and University of Nevada – Reno. Steve and Chris will receive $177,298 a year for two years to study “Stable isotopes of dissolved oxygen as tracers of chemical and biological processes in groundwater.”

Montana Tech Wins C.A.S.E. Award

CASE recently awarded Montana Tech a bronze in the advertising spots and public announcements category at the District VIII award ceremony. The award is for the Get Into It! television advertisements.

Athletic Update
The Montana Tech women’s basketball team brought their season to a close on Wednesday night by losing to Carroll College in the first round of the Frontier Conference Tournament. The Tech women finished the season with an 11-18 record. Adrea Thomas, Natalie Shaw and Stephanie Langford were all seniors on this team.

The Montana Tech men’s basketball team also finished up their season on Wednesday night at the Frontier Conference Tournament. The men fell to Lewis and Clark State in the 8 p.m. game at the Maroon Activities Center 76-58. The men’s team will finish the season with a 6-23 record and will lose seniors Casey Briggs and Shea Bradshaw.

The Montana Tech volleyball team posted a 3.32 GPA for fall semester and has a cumulative GPA of 3.33. Three players earned straight A’s for fall semester. They were CoreyAnne Russell, Samantha Sheble, and Kristi Witt. Ten out of eleven eligible players were selected to the Academic All-Conference Team. Those players include the following: Lacie Brenton, Jessie Conners, Katie Daly, Cassie Hodges, Maria McNeil, CoreyAnne Russell, Samantha Sheble, Darcy Torske, Megan Wichman, and Kristi Witt. Lacie Brenton was also named to the Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete Team. That award is given to athletes who have above a 3.5 GPA and are at least a junior in academic standing.
