Beta Xi Sigma Hold Induction Ceremony
Montana
Tech’s Beta Xi Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa held its induction
ceremony on Tuesday, February 27th in the COT Commons. Phi Theta
Kappa is a society for two-year students who have attained a 3.5
GPA after completing at least 12 credits towards a two-year degree.
Congratulations to the following students who were recently inducted:
Cole Anderson, Thomas Bray, Joshua Bush, Michael Chavez, Christina
Crosby, Paula Gummer, Heather Hackman, Teri Hoff Valle, Megan Irvin,

Sarah Peterson, Steve Salminen, Jamie Seymour, Carlin Smith, Robert
Stewart, Shane Watson, and Jeremy Williams.
Mineral Museum to Host Best Selling Author Dr. Richard Kurin
The Mineral Museum at Montana Tech will host Dr. Richard Kurin,
the bestselling author of “The Hope Diamond, The Legendary
History of a Cursed Gem” on Wednesday, March 7 at 7:00 p.m.
in the Montana Tech Library Auditorium. Dr. Kurin will present the
history of the famous Hope Diamond and tales of the alleged curse
that has followed it throughout time.
Dr. Richard Kurin is a former Fulbright fellow with a PhD in cultural
anthropology from the University of Chicago. He taught at the Johns
Hopkins University Nitze School of Advanced International Studies.
He is presently the Director of the Smithsonian Center for Folklife
and Cultural Heritage, which has produced many cultural heritage
programs that have earned numerous Grammy, Emmy, Academy, and Webby
awards and nominations.
Dr. Kurin’s visit is co-sponsored by the Montana Tech Mineral
Museum and the Montana Tech Campus-to-Community Speaker Program.
COT Students Complete Hockey Rink in PhillipsburgMontana
Tech students have recently been honored by the city of Phillipsburg
for their help in completing a community ice rink. The students
surveyed, recorded elevations and took aerial photos, before confirming
that the location was perfect for the expanded ice-rink. For the

Governor Schweitzer Visits Campus
Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer visited Montana Tech’s campus
as part of the Environmental Engineering Alumni Workshop. He gave
the opening talk discussing new energy sources and the effects they
may have on Montana's economy and environment.
Science Fair
Don’t forget the elementary and middle school science fair
will be on campus Tuesday, March 6. Be sure to check out the students’
research sometime between 9 a.m. and 12 noon.
Athletic Update
The Montana Tech Women’s Basketball team has wrapped up its
season after losing to Carroll College in the first round of the
Frontier Conference Tournament. The team finished the season 16-13,
showing a dramatic improvement over last season’s six wins.
The team will return every player next year and will be adding a
couple of very talented freshman to the roster.
The Montana Tech Men’s Basketball team finished their season
after losing to Carroll College in the first round of the Frontier
Conference Tournament at the Maroon Activities Center. The men will
finish the year 10-18, in the first year of Coach Larson’s
campaign. The team will graduate seven players this season but has
plenty of talent coming back next year to be very successful.

15th Annual Mine Design, Operations & Closure Conference
The Mine Waste Technology Program will again be hosting the 15th
Annual Mine Design, Operations & Closure Conference April 22-26,
2007. The conference will be held at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort.

Congratulations to Bob Ziegler
Bob Ziegler, a professor in the Liberal Studies department has published
his 3rd book. The book is titled: “The Nothing Machine: The
Fiction of Octave Mirbeau”. The book will be published by
Presses Rodopi, an Amsterdam based publisher of academic books on
art history, philosophy, literary criticism, psychology, and religion.
Mining Team
Good luck to the mining team as they compete in the Annual International
Student Mining Team Contest in Arizona. The following students will
be competing: Heather Dahlman, Jack Stratton, Luke Rocco, Jack Raty,
James Sholty, Sedel Yeager, Erica Tobin, Christina Lamer, Hannah
Clark, Jane Fillmore, Patrick Kohlmeier, Justin Pickar, Chris Roos,
Kyle Murphy, Blake Walla, Jordan Reese, and Conrad Dean.
5th Annual Talent Show
For the 5th year in a row, RHA and Residence Life are presenting
a campus-wide talent contest. The prizes are hot and the competition
is fierce, so if you would like to enter you need to let Molly Kreyssler
know by March 26th. Faculty and Staff are also encouraged to participate
to “shake your groove thang” and show all of us your
bright side!

Environmental Design Team Presentations
The Environmental Design Team will be giving their presentations
Tuesday, March 27 at 3:30 pm in SE 113 in preparations for their
upcoming competition in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Plan on attending
and helping this team prepare for their competition.
General Engineering Competition
Good luck to the General Engineering Team as they travel to Alaska
to participate in the 2007 Pacific Northwest Regional Conference.
The contest includes competitions in surveying, bridge design, and
a written essay competition. The competition begins April 11, and
ends April 14.
Athletic Update
Spring sports are starting up with Volleyball and Football both
beginning their spring seasons on March 19th. The spring seasons
will culminate on April 21 with the Digger Auction and the Spring
Football Scrimmage.
The Digger Golf team will kick off its spring golf season in Lewiston,
Idaho on March 26th and 27th. After a solid fall season the Orediggers
hold a 12 stroke lead on the second place team in the conference.
