Two Undergraduate Research Students Attend Conference
Meredith Lafond and Michalee Moen were able to attend the Sigma XI Conference in Detroit Michigan. While at the conference they presented a poster describing what they were doing in the Stierle Lab. Meredith and Michalee were very thankful for the opportunity to talk with other scientists and communicate to them what research was going on at Montana Tech.

Ray Rogers Brings Health Care Informatics Great Press!
Ray Rodgers was a featured writer in the January edition of Most Wired Online. His article describes the job demands that are affecting the health care field. He also gives kudos to Tech for creating the first undergraduate program in Healthcare Informatics. Read the article here.

Marisa Pedulla's Phage Hunting with Middle Schoolers Featured.
Marissa Pedulla has brought more press to her lab by co-writing an article describing the gap between the goal of highschool science and the reality, and where Phage Hunting helps bridge the gap. For more information click here.

Dean Jane Baker Nominated for Educator of The Year
The Southwest Montana Ambassadors have nominated College of Technology Dean Jane Baker for Educator of the Year, in recognition of her dynamic leadership, her emphasis on student access and affordability, and her work to ensure that the University System is responsive to business and industry needs, through COT offerings and state-wide service.

Congratulations to Water Researchers
The Montana University System Water Center, awarded $56,000 in grants and fellowships to researchers who study Montana's water. Grant and Fellowship recipients for Montana Tech are listed below:

  • Steve Parker, Montana Tech. Identifying and characterizing sources of dissolved organic carbon in the Big Hole and Clark Fork Rivers.
  • Chris Gammons, Montana Tech. Temporal and spatial changes in the concentration and isotopic composition of nitrate in the upper Silver Bow Creek drainage.
  • Keri Petritz, Montana Tech. She will study biogeochemical controls of arsenic.

Athletic Update
The Montana Tech Women's basketball team has been in action throughout the break. They opened December with an exhibition loss to Idaho State (102-59) before they reeled off four straight wins heading into conference play. The womens defeated Point Loma Nazarene University (57-56), Roberts Wesleyan College (77-47) Jamestown college (63-52) and University of Mary (78-72) all on the road. The women started their conference season off against #7 UM Western. The women were unable to stop the two All-American posts and fell to UM Western (73-61). The following weekend Carroll and Rocky Mountain College came to town to face the Digs. The women again could not stop the post play of Carroll and lost (81-52). The following night the women were able to right the ship and defeat Rocky Mountain College (64-59). The women have moved their record to 13-4 overall and 1-2 in conference.

The Montana Tech Men's basketball team also was in action over the break. The men beat Dickinson State at home (95-90) before falling to Minot State the following night (79-75). The Univesity of Montana was next on the slate for the Diggers in an exhibition match up. Despite a strong first half effort the Diggers could not hang around in the second half and lost (92-63). The men finished their non-conference schedule against a strong University of Saskatchewan team winning (67-64). When January came, the men opened their conference season with a two point win over UM Western (78-76) reclaiming the Digger Dawg cup. The following weekend Carroll and Rocky Mountain College came to town with Carroll getting the victory on Friday night (78-68). On Saturday the men hosted Rocky and came away with a one point win (69-68). With these games in the books the men's record has gone to 6-9 overall and 2-1 in conference.

The Montana Tech football team has added a second full time assistant. Trevor DiMarco has been hired as an Assistant Coach and part time Sports Information Director. Please welcome Trevor on board.
