Economic Impact Report
Students enrolled in the Department of Business and Information Technology’s Marketing Strategies and Research class recently completed an analysis of the economic impact of Montana Tech on Butte. The analysis estimates that Montana Tech has a direct economic impact of over $74 million on the local economy. Furthermore, the presence of Montana Tech in Butte results in the creation more than 740 jobs.  For the entire report click HERE.

Sloan Scholarship Awarded
Recently, Mr. John KillEagle applied for and was accepted as the Montana Tech-Sloan Foundation Partnerships first successful applicant.  He will begin class this January (Spring 06).  John’s path to this point has taken many turns, beginning on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation near Dodson, MT.  John was born and raised near Dodson, graduating from Dodson High School in 1979.  Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served 9 years.  John enjoyed the travel and adventure the Navy offered, enabling him to visit all of the world’s continents except Antarctica.  After leaving the Navy he returned home and worked for area farmers and ranchers and served as a BIA wild-land fire fighter.  For the entire story click HERE

STRR Workshop

Foundation Community Reception

Super Bowl Party
The DAA will be hosting its annual Super Bowl Party on February 5th at the Red Lion Hotel.  The party will start @ 3:30 and go until the game is over.  The cost is $30 per person which includes: snacks, buffet dinner, beverages and door prizes.  Please contact the DAA to RSVP.

TGIF
The next TGIF will be taking place on Feb. 10, at 4 pm at the South Campus.  Come and join in the fun.

Athletic Update
The Montana Tech Men's Basketball team dropped its record to 9-9 on the season after a 90-75 loss at the hands of Carroll College.  The team will try and rebound Saturday night when they take on the Battling Bears from Rocky Mountain college in Billings.  Their game will tip off at 8.  The men also dropped a game at rival UM Western last Thursday.  The men will return home on Friday, January 27 to take on Westminster College.  The team will play Lewis and Clark State on Saturday, January 28.

The Women's Basketball team fought a hard battle at UM Western last Thursday but came up just short in a 54-48 loss to the #6 ranked Bulldogs.  The team then traveled to Carroll College on January 19 to take on the Saints.  The game started bad for the digs and they could never recover as they fell 83-47.  They now will travel to Billings to take on Rocky Mountain on Saturday, January 21. The team will return home for two games next weekend as they take on Westminster College on Friday, and Lewis and Clark State on Saturday.

Congratulations

Dr. Steve Parker
was recently awarded a $14,646 water research grant from the Montana Water Center.  This money was awarded to him to do research on, Carbon cycling and the temporal isotope composition of dissolved inorganic and organic carbon in streams. 

Dr. Chris Gammons of Montana Tech was also awarded a $14,000 water research grant from the Montana Water Center.  Dr. Gammons is currently researching Temporal and spatial changes in the concentration and isotopic composition of nitrate in the upper Silver Bow Creek drainage.

Kenneth Bates, an undergraduate student in the Chemistry Department, was recently awarded a research fellowship from the Montana Water Center.

Call for Distinguished Alumni
The time has come to open nominations for the Distinguished Alumni Awards, which will be awarded during Commencement Ceremonies on May 13, 2006.

Candidates for this prestigious award must have received an associates or higher degree from Montana Tech, All Honorary Alumni, as conferred by the Montana Tech Alumni Association, shall also be eligible. In addition, candidates must have established a professional career of at least 20 years, of which five years have been in a definitely responsible capacity, and who has either contributed in an outstanding manner to the furtherance of his or her profession and/or has been an outstanding contributor to the College. Candidates can be nominated by alumni or faculty/staff/administration that hold Regents contracts. The nominator must first supply a brief letter of nomination summarizing why the nominee should be considered for the Distinguished Alumni Award. Once all nomination letters have been received, the Award Selection Committee will review all nomination letters and will select nominees who will be given further consideration.

John Ray selected for Oxford Round Table
Dr. John W. Ray of Montana Tech's Liberal Studies Department has been invited to participate in the prestigious Oxford Round Table to be held at Oxford University in England in August 2006. The topic of the Round Table is History as a Guide to the New International Order: The United States, Europe and China in the 21st Century. The Round Table is a small interdisciplinary group of scholars who present papers and discuss the ramifications of the above topic. Thirty-Five participants have been invited from around the world to participate in the Round Table.

Press Conference
Montana Tech will be hosting a press conference on Thursday, January 12 at 11am in the Big Butte Room.We will be announcing the most recently completed Economic Impact Report of Montana Tech on the Butte economy. The report will be made available at the press conference.

Mandatory Training for Faculty and Staff
There is a mandatory "Harassment & Discrimination Prevention Training" scheduled.  Everyone will be required to attend a session. 

Athletic Update
The Women's basketball team has finished off a tough pre conference season with two losses in a double header to Pacific Lutheran University.  The girls are now gearing up for coach Brian Holsinger's first Frontier Conference match up.  The Lady Orediggers (4-11) take on the University of Great Falls tonight, Friday, January 6th.  They will face off with MSU Northern tomorrow night, Saturday January 7th.  The Lady Diggers are being led by senior post player Marcie Alzeheimer.  The girls game will tip off at 6 pm and will be followed by the men at 8pm.

The Men's basketball team has run its record to 8-6 after a successful road trip to Canada.  In Canada the boys beat Concordia College of Canada and Kings college.  In these two games the Orediggers got huge games from their post players. The Orediggers will kick off their conference season tonight against a Great Falls team that is 7-8 and very explosive on the perimeter.  They will counter Great Falls perimeter with Luke Harmon and Davin Blixt, both all conference selections last season.  With their most athletic player Sam Conely coming back, the Orediggers looked poised to start the conference season very strong.  The game against Great Falls tips off tonight at 8 pm.  The Diggers will play the Lights from MSU Northern tomorrow night at 8pm.
