Tech Nursing Department Receives Grant as Part of MTGEC’S
Consortium
The Montana Geriatric Education Center recently received a three
year grant from U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration:
1 D31 HP 08817-01-00. The total award is $1,074,160.00 and supports
the center 100%. MTGEC’s new consortium is composed of The
University of Montana, Northwest Research & Education Institute
and Montana Tech.
All 44 geriatric education centers in the United States lost federal
funding as a result of the 2005 Congress failing to fund the program
after its 22 years of existence. Funding actually ended June 30,
2006, but the MTGEC has been able to continue limited operations
on carry over funding it had accrued, including the planning of
its 5th annual conference, which will be held October 19, 2007.

Athletic Update
The Montana Tech Football Team has run its record to 4-3.
The team beat Eastern Oregon at homecoming 35-17. Following the
win, Carroll College came to town and beat the Diggers at home 17-0.
This game fit the mold of a Carroll – Tech game with both
teams playing hard and defense being the key. After the loss, Tech
looked to continue its trend of winning every other game when they
went to MSU-Northern. The trend held true as the Diggers beat MSU-Northern
in Havre 17-7. The team will look to break the win, lose, win, lose
trend for their season this week as they travel to Billings to take
on Rocky Mountain College.
The Volleyball team had a 13 game winning streak after getting through
homecoming weekend. Just like in life, all good things come to an
end. The team went on the road to Westminster College (#11) and
Lewis and Clark State and lost both games. However, the team did
not stay down long. They returned home and got back to their winning
ways by beating Rocky Mountain College (3-0) and Carroll College
(3-0). The team spends the next two weeks on the road as they go
to Dillon tonight, and to Great Falls and MSU-Northern on Oct. 26
and 27.
Tech’s Women’s Basketball team got its season underway
on Oct. 11 when the University of Lethbridge came to town. The Orediggers
were unable to get in their groove as they played a very close game
but came up short 64-62. The Diggers had the lead with six seconds
to go but Lethbridge had an answered prayer as they drained a half
court shot to steal the win. The team will now go on the road to
play Dickenson State on Oct. 26 and Minot State on Oct. 27.
The Men’s team will open their season tonight as they take
on the University of Calgary. The team has a lot of new faces and
brings tons of athletic ability to the floor. Look for the team
to get out and run, and play an exciting style of basketball. Check
them out tonight at 8 p.m.
