Geophysical Engineering Department Receives 14 Million Dollars
in Software
The Geophysical Engineering Department at Montana Tech recently
received software valued at $13,900,000 through a strategic
university alliance grant agreement with Landmark Graphics
Corporation, Houston, TX. The software package comprises
software for processing and interpretation of two- and three-dimensional
digital seismic data and associated petrophysical and well
log information. This grant allows students in the geophysical
engineering department to gain experience with state-of-the-art
software that they will work with when they enter industry.
Dr. Marvin Speece, Geophysical Engineering Department Head,
said “This software grants gives our geophysics students
the opportunity to use the latest and greatest technology
and keep them at the forefront in job placement.”
The software package will be used for both research and
classroom projects. The recent grant is an expansion of
previous grants that now permits licensing of the software
on a 32-node Linux cluster resident in the department. The
multi-node processing function improves the department’s
capability to work with increasingly large and complex seismic
data sets.
