Tech student named to regents
Gov. Brian Schweitzer appointed Kerra Melvin, a junior at Montana Tech, for a one-year term as the student regent on the state Board of Regents on Wednesday.
Melvin is studying business information systems and has an overall grade point average of 4.0. She is a 2005 graduate of Butte Central High School. Melvin, 20, said she was honored to be selected and said she will work to be “a great advocate for students.’’
“I’ll work for affordability, accessibility and transferability of credits,’’ she said.
Melvin, who said she is not an advocate of either major political party, is working as a legislative intern for a Helena law firm, monitoring committee meetings and tracking the status of bills. Melvin, whose term begins July 1, will succeed Heather O’Loughlin, a University of Montana law student from Great Falls.


Tech student doing a research internship at MIT
Pat Kane, a student triple-majoring in Computer Science, IT&D, and Biology will be researching at MIT as part of the 2007 Amgen-UROP Scholars Program. Pat, who is a Micron Scholar will be doing his research this summer.
“Pat is an excellent student who has done outstanding work in each of my courses,” said Celia Schachczenski.
Amgen Scholars learn how to collaborate effectively in research settings while investigating areas of research interest within a specific discipline and gaining practical skills and knowledge for both graduate study and post-graduation careers. Participants become fully integrated in MIT’s summer research community, interacting with faculty mentors and fellow undergraduates while participating in research seminars and other networking events. Most importantly, Amgen Scholars will become involved in exciting research and will contribute to the advancement of science in an area of interest.

Tech student wins Goldwater Scholarship
Montana Tech student Chris Dienes, has received a prestigious National Scholarship. Chris was one of 317 students nation-wide to receive the Barry M Goldwater Scholarship. Chris is a junior math major, whose academic record and application are exceptional. Chris’s essay, "Promoting the Understanding of Statistics in Today's Society" described the importance of communicating the understanding of statistics to society. Appreciating that when combined with a true interest in education, the impact of one's work can extend beyond those in the field, Chris will contribute richly to the community during the course of his career.
“I am very excited about attending graduate school and having a career in math. This scholarship will make it possible for me to chase these dreams. It is also nice to know that you have just as good an opportunity at national scholarships at Montana Tech as you do at larger universities,” Dienes stated.

Business students inducted into honor society
Nine Montana Tech Business students and one professor were recently inducted into the Sigma Beta Delta Honor Society. Sigma Beta Delta is a honor society for students in business, management, and administration. Becoming a member of Sigma Beta Delta is he highest natonal recogniion a business student can recieve at a college or university with a Sigma Beta Delta chapter. To be eligible for membership, a business student must rank in the upper 20 percent of the junior, senior or master's class and be invited to membership by the faculty officers. The purposes of Sigma Beta Delta are to encourage and recognize scholarship and achievement among students of business, management and administration, and to encourage and promote personal and professional improvement and a life distinguished by honorable service to humankind.
This classes inductees are: Jeremy Harvey, Michael Huotte, Becki Driscoll, Jonna Davis, Levi Dyckman, Katherine Dorr, Toni Perry, Jenelle Stokken, Clifford Ricky and honorary inductee, John Nugent.

Congratulations Montana Tech Mining Team
This year the Montana Tech Mining Team competed for the 29th straight year, at the International Intercollegiate Mining Competition.
This year it was held in Tucson, Arizona. In the competition five person teams compete with schools from around the world in seven different mining events. This year Montana Tech sent one women's team and two men's teams. The Men’s A team placed 2nd overall, Men’s B team placed 6th overall, and the Women’s team placed 2nd overall.


Tech professors have papers accepted for international conference in Germany
Drs. John and Roberta Ray of Montana Tech's Liberal Studies Department have been competitively selected to present papers at the International Listening Association's convention to be held in July in Frankfurt, Germany. Their papers center on the importance of listening for
effective citizenship and a functioning democracy.


Congratulations to MSTC graduate students
Congratulations to Dakota Cannavaro and Brandi Watts of the Technical Communications graduate department. They have had their poster session accepted for the Annual Society for Technical Communication conference in Minneapolis in May.


Biology students being accepted to medical and veterinary schools
-Kirk Caddell, a biology student, has been offered a position at the University of Arizona Medical School.
-Lydia Gnagey has accepted a position at Colorado Sate University School of Veterinary Medicine.
-Jonnae Lumsden has been accepted to Oregon State School of Veterinary Medicine.
- Zar Berg was offered a summer internship in toxicology at UC Davis.

Metallurgical student receives scholarship to LeaderShape Institute
Nick Gow, a student in Metallurgical Engineering, has received a scholarship to the LeaderShape Institute this summer from the ASM Foundation.
The LeaderShape Institute is a six-day experience which builds leadership skills that no other program can match. The Institute is full of self-discovery and learning from practical experiences that build leadership concepts and abilities.

Micron Presentations
Representatives from Micron Technology of Boise Idaho will be on campus April 19. Micron will be here to present two scholarships to CS/SE students. In addition to the scholarships the "Micron Scholars" get a summer internship. The ceremony will be held at 4pm on April 19 in the Student Union Building.

Athletic Update
The Montana Tech Volleyball Team competed at the UM- Western Tournament on March 24. Tech had two teams competing in the 11-team tournament. One team went undefeated in the tournament and placed first. That team consisted of Jodi Hogart, Cassie Hodges, CoreyAnne Russell, Lacie Brenton, Jessie Conners, and Janet Friesz. The other Tech team placed 8th.
The Montana Tech Football Team will hold its second spring scrimmage today April 6th at 4:30pm. More than 100 plays are scheduled as the coaching staff continues their evaluation of 105 gridiron hopefuls. Today’s scrimmage will include various offense/defense field positions and their associated situations. Special teams will include live punting and field goals.

Environmental Design Team Brings Home More Hardware
Montana Tech’s Environmental Design Team brings home two trophies in the WERC Consortium for Environmental Education and Technology Development Environmental Design Contest. Months of hard work paid off for the teams as they were able to keep Tech’s impressive streak of bringing home trophies alive.

Team one entered Task 4 (Conversion of Biomass Resource to Useful Forms of Energy and Other Products) and placed second. Team members were Keri Petritz, Cameron Clark, Anna Carter, Devin McCarthy, Jonathan Johnstone, Mary Kunish, Britney Welsch, Yana Robertson, and Meaghen Kraft.

Team two entered Task 5 (Bacteria and/or Virus Removal from Pond Water) and also placed second. Team members were Josh Bryson, Laura Griffis, Narven Osteen, Grant Rodway, Mike Welch, Jessie Boettcher, Yana Robertson, and Meaghen Kraft.

The teams were advised by Mark Peterson, of Montana Tech’s Mine Waste Technology Program and Holly Peterson, of Montana Tech’s Environmental Engineering Department.


Alumni Mining Team Takes First
The Montana Tech Alumni Team took first place in the Alumni Division of the 29th Annual International Intercollegiate Mining Competition hosted by the University of Arizona held in Tucson, Arizona on March 24th defeating the University of Missouri-Rolla and University of Arizona. They placed first in hand steel, swede saw, and mucking; second in track stand, gold panning, and survey and third in jack leg. The team consisted of, Robin McCulloch (Tech Mining Prof.), Tye Lasich (GEOE ’04), Justin Sullivan (MIN ’04), Russell Sheets (GEOE ’02), and Matt Haas (MIN ’02).


 

 

Tech Library Receives Allocation
Betsy Harper-Garlish, Montana Tech faculty librarian, has received a $6,500 allocation from the Montana State Library Commission in support of the virtual reference service which she heads called, “Ask a Montana Librarian” (http://montanalibraries.org <http://montanalibraries.org/>). “Ask a Montana Librarian” is part of a nationwide cooperative providing 24/ 7 access to librarians who answer questions via live chat and email.

Betsy has chaired the Montana branch of the cooperative since 2004. She is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the service, administering the software, and handling training and scheduling for 40 librarians in 24 participating Montana libraries.


Alumni Selected as Marshall Memorial Fellow
Chris “Shoots” Veis has been selected as a 2007 American Marshall Memorial Fellow through the German Marshall Fund. Veis, a member of the Billings City Council, will travel to Europe in June for the fellowship. Veis is the first person from Montana chosen for a Marshall Memorial Fellowship.
Veis is one of fifty-seven emerging American leaders representing 20 states and the District of Columbia that have been awarded the prestigious Marshall Memorial Fellowship (MMF) for 2007. They will each spend 23 days in Europe visiting institutions, societies, and cultures and learning about economic, political, and social issues facing the United States and Europe. Now entering its 25th year, the MMF program currently includes Fellows from 21 European countries and the United States. Click HERE for more.

 


Tech Student Wins Scholarship
Montana Tech student Kirsten Howerlls recently won a $1,500 scholarship from the Wyoming chapter of explosive engineers. Congratulations Kirsten!
