Dependent Students
If you are considered a dependent student by Federal Regulations and have been selected for a process called verification, you must complete the dependent verification worksheet below and either do the IRS Data Retrieval update or request a Tax Transcript directly from the IRS for both student and parent (see instructions below).
Dependent Verification Worksheet 13-14
IRS Data Retrieval Tool - Submitting your FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool allows you to transfer information directly from the IRS to your FAFSA.
- Visit www.fafsa.gov
- Log into student's FAFSA record
- Select "Make FAFSA Correction"
- Enter Student's PIN
- Create a password for this correction
- Go to the Financial Information section of the form
- Follow instructions to see if you are eligibile to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool
- Make sure if you are eligible to use this IRS Data Retrieval that you choose the option to transfer your IRS information to the FAFSA.
You may not be able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool due to one of the following reasons.
- Tax return fililng status is "Married Filing Separately"
- Marital status changed since January 1, 2013
- Changes were made to tax questions on the FAFSA after the IRS Data Retrieval has taken place
- Filed an amended return
- Are required to file, but have been granted a filing extension by the IRS
- Filed a Puerto Rican or foreign tax return
Tax Transcript - if you are unable to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, you must submit a Tax Transcript from the IRS to our office. Most requests are processed within 10 days. Requesting a Tax Transcript is free of charge. You can request a Tax Transcript in one of the following ways:
- You may request a Tax Transcript online through the IRS website by going to www.irs.gov. Under Tools, select "Order a Return or Account Transcript". Under Option 3, select "Order a Transcript." Complete the required information. Under type of Transcript, select "Return Transcript" from the drop down menu and 2012 for the Tax Year and a Tax Transcript will be ordered.
- Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 (on the automated menu):
- Enter and verify your Social Security Number
- Enter in your street address number
- Select Option #2 to request a Tax Transcript
- Enter and verify the year of your needed Tax Transcript (for a 2013-14 verification, request the 2012 tax year)
- Please send this tax transcript to Montana Tech at the address or fax number above.
- You may complete Form 4506T: Request for Transcript of Tax Return, and mail it or fax it to the address/fax number indicated on the form. To request a Tax Transcript check box 6a. You can print this form at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506t.pdf.
Independent Students
