Short Course: April 20, 2008

Principles & Practices of Water Management by Land Application

Instructors: Daniel Bruner, P.G., & Daniel Burgard, CPSSc, of Cascade Earth Sciences

Time:      8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Cost:       $120  (Lunch will be provided.)

Mining operations commonly manage excess water during mining and closure. Land application is an important and unique water management solution that avoids surface water discharge and provides final treatment of nitrogen and trace elements in the soil-plant system. Properly designed and operated land application systems benefically reuse water and nutrients while protecting water resources.

This short course is structured to enhance understanding of land application: basic prinicples, strategies, and management practices for compliance, the latest regulatory issues, and practical land application operations, including hands-on monitoring and reporting calculation exercises.

The following questions will be answered during the short course:

  • How does land application treat the constituents in the excess water?
  • What are basic principles of soil-water-plant relations, land application treatment mechanisms, and vegetation management?
  • What are the key regulatory issues now and in the future?
  • What should be considered in designing or improving a land application system?
  • How are land application systems operated and managed to provide peak performance?
  • What monitoring is important and how is it accomplished?
  • What do the monitoring data mean for meeting system performance objectives?
  • What is important for irrigation system planning, design, and operation?
