Galvanically Enhanced Cementation Technology Development

Principal Investigator: Dr. Larry Twidwell
ltwidwell@mtech.edu

This project explored the use of galvanically coupled metals, rather than iron alone, to increase the reduction rate of arsenic (arsenate, arsenite) and selenium (selenate, selenite).  Iron and galvanic couple surfaces were first characterized electrochemically and then iron and galvanic couples were applied for arsenic/selenium removal from both synthetic and real waters.   It was found that both selenate and arsenate reduction proceeded rapidly on an iron substrate.  The use of iron or galvanic couples as the reductant subtrate appears to be a promising tool for arsenic and selenium removal.  The process is independent of the impurity species valence state, sulfate and other anions does not influence the technology, heavy metals more noble than iron are co-extracted, and minimal solid waste is produced.
