Biological Survey of Berkeley Pit Lake
Principal Investigator: Dr. Grant Mitman

The goal of this study was to investigate the microbial ecology
of the Berkeley Pit lake, and to obtain data for further studies
focusing on the bioremediation potential of the pit lake system.
A preliminary, yet comprehensive, investigation of Berkeley Pit
water revealed several species of algae, protozoans, fungi, and
bacteria, some previously unknown. At the surface, bacteria were
found to be present at concentrations 1/9 of that typically found
in a freshwater lake system. Bacteria concentrations decreased dramatically
at depth. Upon completion of the survey, recommendations were made
for utilization of the organisms for in-situ bioremediation.
