Berkeley Pit Water Research Project

Principal Investigator: Dr. H. Huang
hhuang@mtech.edu

The objective of the Berkeley Pit Water Research Project was to establish the feasibility of using physical oxidation (lime addition) to treat the Berkeley Pit water.  Berkeley Pit water was treated using a two-stage neutralization process.  Experimental testing for this project consisted of four phases: physical oxidation, neutralization, and metal removal; metals separation and recovery; use of milling wastes; and diversion and treatment of various inflow water sources.  Physical oxidation with lime addition became the technology named in the Record of Decision for treating the Berkeley Pit water.
