Safety, Health and Industrial Hygiene Overview
At Montana Tech, students are prepared for both safety and industrial hygiene (IH) careers. The continued development of these programs is helping to meet a strong demand for well-educated occupational safety and health (OSH) professionals. The Bachelor of Science program at Montanan Tech is the only established one in the five state region encompassing North and South Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana and is the only program in the United States offered by a primarily minerals and energy engineering college. The Montana Tech OSH program is interdisciplinary and gives the student a background in the sciences and pertinent engineering areas. Emphasis is placed on hands-on work in the laboratory and/or relating the subject matter to real world situations. The quality of the program has been recognized by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health through annual training grants for equipment and scholarships. Opportunities exist for internship appointments in government and industry. Scholarships are available to department majors on a competitive basis.
The following degrees may be earned at Montana Tech through traditional on-campus study.

The OSH Bachelors of Science degree is designed for the science-oriented student who likes to work with people, and is concerned about employee safety and health. The OSH professional may work wherever health or safety hazards exist.
Job diversity is a major benefit to consider when choosing a career in OSH or IH. A wealth of unique employment opportunities exists for safety and health professionals. Unlike many other professions, safety and health professionals are not limited to one particular type of industry. They are employed in a variety of organizations such companies involved in manufacturing, oil and gas exploration and production, construction, mining, public utilities, insurance, government, academia, research, healthcare, and consulting. Placement of our graduates is close to 100% with excellent starting salaries.
The OSH Bachelors of Science - Applied Health Science (AHS) option degree program is designed for the science-oriented student who wishes to work with people, and is concerned about their health and physical well being. The Applied Health Science student will be trained to evaluate an individual's life-style, health habits, and fitness level. The student will learn how to complete a personal fitness assessment and utilize the information gathered to recommend a personalized fitness program that will help the participant improve or maintain their overall health and their physical working capacity. The AHS option takes full advantage of several other college departments and provides the student, through Career Services, with actual on-the-job training.
The curriculum for the Applied Health Science Option prepares graduates for numerous careers in the health sciences. Graduates find employment as personal fitness counselors, corporate wellness directors, and safety and health professionals. Many graduates go on to graduate school in health-oriented fields such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, cardiac rehabilitation, and industrial hygiene.
The Master of Science in Industrial Hygiene prepares individuals to be responsible for the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of workplace environmental factors that may affect the health, comfort, or productivity of workers. While Industrial Hygiene is considered a "science," it is also an "art" that involves judgment, creativity, and human interaction and communication.
An online program allows off-campus students to earn a Master of Science in Industrial Hygiene. A distance-learning program for undergraduates is being phased out. No new students are being accepted.
Students desiring a career as an OSH professional typically pursue a Bachelors of Science in OSH and/or the Master of Science in Industrial Hygiene. Graduates of these programs are well-prepared to anticipate, recognize, evaluate and control workplace safety and health hazards.
