Q. Where can I find employment with an Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) or Industrial Hygiene (IH) degree?

A. Job diversity is a major benefit to consider when choosing a career in OSH or IH. A wealth of unique employment opportunities exists for safety and health professionals. Unlike many other professions, safety and health professionals are not limited to one particular type of industry; they are employed in a variety of organizations such as companies involved in manufacturing, oil and gas exploration and production, construction, mining, public utilities, insurance, government, academia, research, health care, and consulting. Placement of our graduates is close to 100% with excellent starting salaries.

Q. What do OSH professionals do?

A. Occupational health and safety professionals provide a valuable asset to industry, government and research organizations in controlling losses associated with accidents, injuries and illnesses. These professionals are trained to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control hazards. These actions may range from the development of safe operating procedures to sampling for contaminants and designing ventilation systems; all of which reduce employee exposures.

Q. When will I need to choose between OSH and the Applied Health Science (AHS) option?

A. Students entering Montana Tech can take the same set of courses for their first two years. The only difference is the OSH majors must take Chemistry Lab (CHEM 1166). A decision on which degree curriculum to follow should be made before starting the third year of study.

Q. Can graduates find good jobs?

A. Jobs in Southwestern Montana are limited. Graduates in any major who are geographically limited should expect fewer opportunities than graduates who are geographically flexible. Large companies recruiting on campus have openings in many of the western states and some Canadian provinces. Graduates of the OSH AHS can find opportunities for careers in Western Montana, depending on their career emphasis. Graduates of the OSH program should expect to find their first job outside Southwestern Montana. Faculty recommend being geographically flexible for the first job. After getting sufficient experience, the graduate will be better prepared to find a suitable position in their preferred location.

Q. How important is internship experience?

A. Internships are generally during the summer months, although some students do six-month programs or part-time work during the academic year. There are two major benefits of the internship experience. One, students returning from an internship have an increased interest in the courses because they understand the importance of the material in the world. They want to learn and they absorb more of the course material. Two, when seniors interview for career positions, those with internship experience get more offers and better paying offers than those without internships.
