Course Description
This course provides an overview of pollution prevention (p2) for industrial applications. The main theme of p2 is source reduction, recycle/reuse, treatment and ultimate disposal. After introducing some of the basics of pollution prevention the course provides p2 assessment approaches, prioritizing p2 opportunities in industries, and evaluating economic feasibility of p2 options. The course material includes lifecycle analysis, designing and manufacturing products for cleaner environment. P2 for several specific industries such as pulp and paper, electric utility, petroleum production, painting and coating, aluminum manufacturing etc.. It also gives an overview of ISO 14000s environmental management systems and how to establish an environmental management system for a typical industry. The audit procedures involved in ISO 14000 and the procedures involved in industry/plant certification under ISO 14000 will also be discussed. In addition, it discusses environmental ethics, environmental justice, sustainable development and environmental benefits.
Objectives
The main objective of this course is to understand pollution prevention aspects in industrial operations. At the completion of this course one must be able to assess pollution prevention opportunities and prioritize them based on several criteria including cost and also be able to establish an environmental management system under ISO 14000.
Outline
Of the ten modules for this course, seventy percent will be related to pollution prevention with thirty percent covering environmental management systems including ISO 14000.

Grading Policies
There will be two tests and one project. In addition, students will be evaluated based on their participation in threaded discussion. Test #1 25% Test #2 25% Project 30% Participation and other 20%.
