MPEM 5060 -- BUS 4516
Advanced Management Seminar
Instructor
Doug Abbott, Professor, Dean of College of Humanities, Social Science, and Information Technology, Montana Tech of The University of Montana
Text
This seminar does not require a text, but rather will be taught using numerous guest lecturers. Each lecturer will supply his or her own course material.
General Policies and Procedures
As I am new to the world of internet-based learning, I plan to ask other MPEM instructors and the enrolled students for the best days and times to hold “class.” This should be a pretty low-impact course, but does require some outside reading and research before class (asynchronous). Students are expected to participate in any threaded discussions or any of the other “stuff” that is done in class.
Grading Policies
Grades will be earned based upon class participation and the student’s performance on class activities and the final test/paper.
Description
The existence of the word “management” in four of the six required courses in the MPEM program reflects its importance in today’s business world. Advanced Management Seminar delves into the management issues facing today’s professionals. These issues include, but are not limited to; personnel management, labor relations and collective bargaining, strategic human resource management, motivation, leadership, employee assessment, performance appraisals, employee discipline, mediation, sexual harassment, conflict resolution, and negotiations.
Objectives
My primary objective is to introduce management issues and situations that students are likely to encounter and to prepare them to respond effectively. Students, already serving as managers, will be asked to moderate the majority of topics covered to provide their unique insight into the management arena. Upon completion of this course, students will have a better understanding of many of the current issues in the world of “management.”
