Legal Issues Related to Project Engineering and Management
Instructor
Developer and instructor of the course is Mark Reinsel, Professional Chemical Engineer and president of Apex Engineering, PLLC in Helena, MT. Dr. Reinsel has 18 years of experience in consulting, industry and academia. His recent work has focused on treating mining and other industrial wastewaters through chemical, physical and biological methods. His areas of expertise include:

General Policies and Procedures
Each week's lesson will be a narrated PowerPoint presentation to be accessed from a CD or via Blackboard. We will have a weekly "chat room" at a given time each week and a separate threaded discussion of each week's topic. Most of the chat sessions will be student - led.
Grading Policies
Each of four elements will be equally weighted: weekly homework, a mid-term exam, a group project and chat session input. There will be 13 homework assignments, starting with Week 2. Homework will be submitted via e-mail primarily, and by fax if necessary. Homework will be due on the Tuesday night following that week's topic.
Description
This course evaluates processes involved in patents, contracts, etc. The course also will include management regulations related to project engineering, and regulations related to environmental issues.
Objectives
The objectives of MPEM 5030 (IME 580) are to introduce students to legal issues related to Project Management in the following areas:
- Intellectual property (patents)
- ISO 14000 registration
- Hazardous waste background legal issues
- Attorney/expert witness work
- contacts and confidentiality agreements
- Professional Engineer rules and ethics
- Data validation
- Project Management for non-U.S. firms or outside the U.S.
