International Application

Priority Deadlines:

  Fall Semester: March 1
  Spring Semester: July 1

Applications will be accepted after these deadlines. However, consideration for the desired admission term cannot be guaranteed unless all application documents are received by the Graduate School by these dates.

If admitted, your acceptance packet will contain a letter of acceptance and an I-20 form necessary for obtaining an F-1 student visa. If you are currently attending school in the USA, please complete an Eligibility to Transfer Form.

APPLICATION (117 KB): Complete, sign, and submit to Montana Tech’s Graduate School Office.

APPLICATION FEE: A non-refundable check or money order payable to Montana Tech in the amount of $30.00 USD must accompany Application. An application will not be processed until the fee is received.

TRANSCRIPTS: Official transcripts are required from all undergraduate and graduate schools attended as well as a copy of your diploma or certificate of completion. a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale is required for regular admission. Before your application can be considered, you will need to have your complete transcript reviewed by Educational Credentials Evaluators, Inc. (ECE) on a course by course basis, which requires all marksheets of all courses taken even if failed and retaken and a copy of your diploma or certificate of completion. See www.ece.org for more details. An official copy of the report must be sent to Montana Tech's Graduate Studies Office from ECE and show an acceptable GPA as well as the equivalent of a BS in the United States.

REFERENCE FORMS: (37 KB) Three references in English are required. The forms must be sent to the Graduate School Office directly from the reference. (If sent by applicant, place forms in a sealed envelope with the reference’s signature over the seal.)

INTERNATIONAL STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT (36 KB) must be completed by you, the sponsor (if applicable), and the bank certifying that funding will be available to cover estimated expenses during your first year at Montana Tech.  All International students applying for admission must provide a certified financial statement showing at least $23,000 (U.S. dollars).  NOTE: The financial statement should cover expenses for dependents accompanying your to the United States by certifying an additional $4,000 for your spouse, and $1,000 for each child. Please note that all required dollar amounts are subject to change.  All financial statements and documentation must be official.  Photocopies and/or facsimiles will not be processed.  Your application will not processed until an acceptable Financial Statement is received.

GRADUATE RECORD EXAM (GRE) SCORES: General Test Scores are required for all programs except Electrical Engineering, General Engineering, Mining Engineering and Petroleum Engineering. Instruct Educational Testing Service to submit official scores to the Graduate School Office. Montana Tech's School Code is 4487.

TOEFL SCORES: Instruct Educational Testing Service to submit official scores to the Graduate School Office. Montana Tech's School Code is 4487. Minimum scores of at least 525 PBT, 195 CBT, or 71 iBT are required.

A minimum IELTS score of 5.5 is also acceptable.

Project Engineering and Management requires a TOEFL of 550 PBT, 213 CBT, or 80 iBT or an IELTS score of 6.0.

PERSONAL/PROFESSIONAL STATEMENT: Include a typewritten statement outlining academic and professional goals and how they relate to the chosen field of study.

Petroleum Engineering applicants please note: the Department requests that you provide at least two examples of technical writing authored by you. These writings must be in English and you must be the sole author. The examples can be for any technical subject, each one should be at least one page in length, and should have been written within the past 2 years.

FINANCIAL AWARD FORM (32 KB): If applying for Graduate Teaching Assistantship, tuition waiver, or Graduate Research Assistantship, submit Financial Award Application with the Admission Application.

IMMUNIZATION/HEALTH RECORDS (32 KB) A physician must complete and validate the International Student Health form showing immunization dates for diphtheria, tetanus, polio, rubella, measles (two doses of measles vaccine after 1st birthday), and a recent (within 12 months of requested admission term) skin test for tuberculosis.  Please pay close attention to required dates.  Each of these must be identified on the record in English, complete dates given (day, month, year), and must be signed by a physician or registered nurse.

MEDICAL HEALTH INSURANCE  proof is an enrollment requirement for all international students.  Coverage is not required for dependents, but is recommended. Insurance can be purchased through Montana Tech.
