Thesis Abroad Instructions
Montana Tech graduate students can participate in the International Exchange Program by applying to the Thesis Abroad Program. The intent of the program is to provide qualified graduate students with the opportunity to augment their graduate research while obtaining cultural and academic experiences in a foreign host institution.
To apply, complete the Application for Thesis Abroad Program. If you have questions regarding the application process or need assistance completing the requested forms, please contact
Cindy Dunstan.
If accepted into the program, the student will be required to provide the Graduate School with proof of insurance coverage while studying abroad, whether covered by a private policy or enrolling in the HTH insurance program (contact
Margie Pascoe for more information). If you are enrolled in Montana Tech campus insurance, you are covered for travel abroad.
If accepted into the program, you are responsible for obtaining your passport, visa (if required), and appropriate immunizations. Passport and visa information can be found on the Internet. Orientation concerning preparation for international travel will take place on an individual basis.
Program Requirements and Financial Support
The program provides one semester of financial support to Montana Tech graduate students participating in approved thesis research at collaborating foreign institutions. Students must be full time graduate students in good academic standing. Typically applicants will be expected to have completed their first year of graduate study at Montana Tech.
Students are required to participate in ongoing research projects at the host institution under the mentorship of an approved host faculty member. The student’s Thesis Committee and the Department Head must approve the research topic and the collaborating foreign institution in advance.
The program provides up to one semester of living stipends to Montana Tech Thesis Abroad students to cover per diem expenses while visiting the host institution. These costs will be reimbursed at the fixed rate of $3,000/semester. Visits for shorter periods of time will be supported at a per diem rate not to exceed $1,000/month. Travel support to and from the host institution is also available.
Enrollment Requirements
The student must be registered at Montana Tech for 6 hours of thesis credit during their foreign exchange visit. The host institution will not charge tuition but may require the student to register at the host institution. A graduate career total of six graduate-level credits can be considered for transfer from another institution to Montana Tech with the approval of your Tech Department. If you plan to transfer credits from your study abroad, obtain approval from your Department prior to enrolling in the courses (Petition to Transfer Credits form).
Application Timeline We strongly encourage you to apply six months prior to expected departure date to ensure that your application receives full consideration and to allow time for travel plans to be completed.
